Project Overview

The Mail Service Center Renovation modernizes an existing neighborhood mercantile building to improve customer service, operational efficiency, and accessibility. The project reconfigures public and back-of-house areas to support expanded Post Office Box services, secure package handling, and upgraded utilities while maintaining continuous business operations during construction.

Design Intent

The primary design goal was to transform an aging, utilitarian space into a functional and welcoming customer environment without expanding the building footprint. The renovation prioritizes clear wayfinding, improved customer flow, and upgraded service counters, while addressing long-standing accessibility and code compliance deficiencies.

Phasing and constructability were critical considerations, allowing the tenant to remain operational throughout the renovation process.

Architectural Approach

The project reorganizes the interior layout to clearly separate public, service, and staff zones. A new entry lobby and customer service counter anchor the public-facing areas, while a reorganized PO Box enclosure and secure package room improve back-of-house efficiency and security.

Material selections emphasize durability and ease of maintenance, including luxury vinyl plank flooring in public areas, sealed concrete in service zones, and upgraded wall finishes throughout. New storefront glazing improves visibility and daylighting, reinforcing a modernized street presence along Mermod Street.
